To put it simply, hardware profiles allow systems administrator to say which pieces of hardware are enabled or disabled when a system boots up. Imagine that you had to remember to disable your NIC (network interface controller) card on your lap top every time that you were starting it while out of office thus not connected to the company network! What would happen if you forgot?

Until such time that more powerful batteries are available power management is a big consideration when it comes to portable computers. You can not even use the most conservative power management scheme as your default and be happy. Can you see yourself making a presentation in a meeting room; PowerPoint is running on your laptop, connected to a projector; you have the audience totally involved as you walk around the room making eye contact; and then boom; black screen. Even though your laptop is plugged in to the wall it goes to hibernate just because you have been talking for a while and the system assumed that it was left idle! Makes me want to cry!
