Most
romantic unions stem from a moment in time when a realization of how
much two people have in common is born. In our case that was not true.
The horrific incidents of September 11, 2001 had just happened and I
was mad. Zakieh was one of many people that I regularly exchanged e-mails
or online postings with. We were both irate about the incident but we
seldom agreed about the reasons for it and what to do about it. As you
might imagine some of my e-mails were pretty juicy (&*#!%*). However
my exchange with Zakieh always had a very civil tone. It was very comforting
to read her articles posted in various UN publications. And I enjoyed
the fact that we were able to calmly disagree without belittling each
other’s point of view.

I remember writing to her, how much I appreciated her self confidence. It was quite apparent that she is a member of a very loving and supportive family. She knew what she wanted out of life and she felt comfortable talking about it. Yet she never discounted or belittled other people’s opinions and ideas. This was indeed what I had been looking for. This kind of personality is very rear, I had already learned.
There are a lot of people who know what they want for their future and are not willing to look at a different perspective. For what ever reason, either culturally or personally, they have fixated on a single solution to life’s eternal happiness and are willing to step on anyone or anything to achieve it; though they know full well that future is an anima to all.
On the other hand are people that just don’t have any idea about the future and seam to be willing to go with the flow. If there was ever anything that got my goat, well this is it. Their willingness to subscribe to someone else’s vision of the future is only based on their ignorance and has nothing to do with anything remotely related to a sense of allegiance or commitment. And this is why it is easy for them to change their mind when the details of the vision they had so readily partaken in becomes evident.
